The subject of language is a very complex one in India. India is a cacophany of languages. More than 1500 films get produced in India in about 20 different languages. But the major languages of production are Tamil, Telegu, Malayalam, Kannada, and Hindi. The biggest of these is Bollywood which is the nickname for the Hindi film industry based in Bombay (now Mumbai). Actually, there have been years when the Telegu film industry (based in Hyderabad) has surpassed Bollywood in terms of number of movies and/or revenues. But by and large, Bollywood reigns supreme.
The language of Bollywood films is Hindi but strictly speaking the actual language spoken in the films is usually a variant of Hindi, that gets spoken on the streets of different parts of India.
There's Urdu, which is rarely spoken in its pristine form, because it would not be understood by many Indians. The Hindi language that is spoken in the "Hindi belt" is an amalgam of Hindi and Urdu (aka Hindustani) and even that is spoken differently in Lukhnow (the custodian of pure Urdu) and Delhi (where Urdu was born). Elsewhere in the Hindi belt, the purest form of Hindi (Sanskrited Hindi) is spoken in Madhya Pradesh, whereas the Hindi in Bihar is tinged with a fair dose of Bhojpuri. The actual Hindi spoken in Delhi is tinged with Punjabi and Haryanvi to create a khichidi (a gruel) of Delhi Hindi. The Hindi spoken in Hyderabad has its unique southern flavor. Irony of ironies, Bombay - the land of Bollywood where Hindi cinema was born - speaks the worst kind of melting pot Hindi in India - called Bambaiya Hindi. Quite a few successful movies have been made in Bambaiya Hindi, the most famous of them being the Munnabhai series. And last but not the least is Hinglish - which is Hindi mixed with English. It is not uncommon for Hindi-speaking Indians to start a sentence in Hindi, break into English in mid-sentence and end it in Hindi. Finally, the popularity of Bollywood in Pakistan is infecting Pakistani Urdu with Hindi.
