THE POONAWALLA BREEDERS' MULTI-MILLION (GR.1)

"Winning Pretty" was the first filly to win this race in 1995, and the next five years saw the fillies dominating this race, i.e. "Lei" (1996), "Forest Fantasy" (1997), "Indiscretion" (1998), "Her Excellency" (1999), "Six Speed" (2000).

The winners of this race so far since its inception are "Le Gris Cheval" (1990), "Ponta Delegado" (1991), "Flying Brave" (1992), "Red Buttons" (1993), "Brave Hunter" (1994), "Winning Pretty" (1995), "Lei" (1996), "Forest Fantasy" (1997), "Indiscretion" (1998), "Her Excellency" (1999), "Six Speed" (2000), "Noble Opinion" (2001), "Priceless" (2002), "Secret Romeo" (2003), "Blurr" (2004), "Fedora" (2005), "Haunting Memories" (2006), and "Bourbon King" (2007).

S. A. POONA WALLA MILLION (Gr.2)

The race is named after the late Mr. Soli A. Poonawalla, an ardent lover of clean horse racing, one of the pioneers of thoroughbred breeding in India and father of Dr. Cyrus and Mr. Zavaray S. Poonawalla. He sowed the seeds in establishing the now famous Poonawalla Stud Farm in 1946, when thoroughbred breeding was in infancy in India. The desire and the passion to breed the best in the country brought him his first laurels in the very first year of operations when Flying Red won the 2000 Guineas and missed winning the Derby in a tight finish. The Pooonawalla Stud Farms have thereafter gone to win a record tally of 287 Classics, including 8 Indian Derbies, 5 in a row, and 12 Indian Turf Invitation Cups.

THE C.N. WADIA GOLD CUP MILLION (GR.2)

n the following year this race attained Grade II status and, "Davidoff", owned by Messers Vijay Mallya, Neeraj Rawal and Mrs Promilla Rawal won the race trained by R. R. Byramji ridden by Lowe by a short head from "Northern Star"(M. J. Kinane up) net stakes Rs 2,24,800/.

Once again the race had a close finish. In 1993 when "Treasure Hunt" won from "Red Charger" which lost by a short head. In 1999 "Act in Time" won by a neck beating "Star Supreme", in another close finish.

The only professional to record a hat trick was jockey Aslam Khader who won on "Alarming " (199/ "Dubinushka" (1998) and "Act in Time"(1999).

THE DR. S. C. JAIN SPRINTERS' MILLION (GR.2)

The race is named after an illustrious past Chairman of the Club, Dr. Shashi Chand Jain, who held this position for a record 13 years. After a break of over ten years, Dr. Jain was reelected to the Committee in December 2006.

That's just what its founders envisioned when the concept of The Dr. S. C. Jain Sprinters' took root in 1995, before which it was run as 'Committee Gold Trophy (Gr.3).' The inaugural running of this race saw 'EXCLUSIVE VIRTUE' for Deepak Khaitan, trained by Bharat Singh, and ridden by Aslam Khader winning this race. Subsequently, it achieved Grade 2 status in the year 1999 where we saw 'INDISCRETION' winning for Five Star Shipping Company Pvt. Ltd., trained by C. D. Katrak, and ridden by M. Narredu.
This race became a cornerstone for The Invitation Cup Sprinters'. Since then, The Dr. S. C. Jain Sprinters' has redefined the racing calendar - becoming the season's best Sprinter race. The champions who have crowned this event are 'EXCLUSIVE VIRTUE', 'BRAVEHUNTER', 'RISING FLAME', 'ANCIENT WARRIOR', 'INDISCRETION' (twice), 'SIMPLY NOBLE', 'PALAZZIO' (twice) 'ALGECIRAS', 'BLUE HORIZON', 'OYSTER COVE' (twice).

THE RAMNIWAS RAMNARAIN RUIA GOLD CUP (GR.2)

Subsequently, this race attained Grade 3 status in the year 1987, and was won by "CHAITANYA CHAKRAM", owned by Messers V. C. Narasimha Reddy, V. Vasanthkumar Reddy, J. S .Dhariwal and Sukbir S Bedi, trained by J S Dhariwal and ridden by L.Marshall.
In the year 2000, this race was upgraded to a Gr. 2 event, which saw "SMART CHIEFTAN" winning for Dr.M.A.M.Ramaswamy, trained by Karan Singh and ridden by R.Hughes. SMART CHIEFTAN won the Indian Triple Crown this year.
This race is an excellent race in its own right, its viewed as the major preparatory race for The Indian Derby and is regarded as one of the most prestigious races. Some of the great horses who went on to win this race and Derby are BRIGHT HANOVER, COMMANCHE, SQUANDERER, MANITOU, ROYAL TERN, ALMANAC, CHAITANYA CHAKRAM ,SMART CHIEFTAN, INDICTMENT, STAR SUPREME. This year the RWITC has guaranteed stakes of RS.10 lakhs, befitting its status as a top class graded race.

THE EVE CHAMPION TROPHY (Gr.3)

The Eve Champion Trophy commemorates Sir Victor Sassoon who was one of the most most distinguished personalities of the Turf in the 20th Century.

Evelyn Victor Sassoon was born into the Baghdadi Jewish Sassoon family, well known for their extensive business interest and Philanthropy in India. Educated in England, he served in World War I before being wounded.

THE GENERAL RAJENDRASINHJI TROPHY (Gr. 3)

The General Rajendrasinhji Trophy, is considered the most important lead-up race for The Pune Derby and has been won by several champion horses in the past, some of whom have also gone to win The India Derby.

elusive pimpernel 1995

ELUSIVE PIMPERNEL (Calcutta, 1995)
The best horse I have trained - these were the words when I asked Rashid Byramji about Elusive Pimpernel. A horse who raced and won at six different centres, winning 22 of his 23 starts. Elusive Pimpernel thrived on racing and the more he raced the better he developed physically. After his victory in the Indian Derby, Elusive Pimpernel was flown to Calcutta which meant that he got there in good shape. Rashid Byramji feels that he was at his peak physically in Calcutta and his best race track performance was when he won the Invitation Cup in Calcutta.

These are just half of Byramjis Invitation Cup winners and it would take a book to put down all the incidents that went into making champions of these equine athletes. Rashid Byramji acknowledges that he has been extraordinarily lucky to be associated with some of the best owners who gave him some of the finest horses to train. This however is only part of the story as it is Byramjis skill as a trainer and conditioner of horses that made these horses champions. Despite being a professional for nearly five decades and winning every major prize multiple times, the fire still remains and it would be a brave person who bets against Rashid Byramji saddling more Invitation Cup winners before he is finally done with the sport.

adler

ADLER (Hyderabad, 1993)
One of the best horses never to have won the Indian Derby. Adler was prone to problems with his stifle. In the Indian 2000 Guineas Rashids instructions to Vasant Shinde were clear “keep him moving all the time. Donf't let him come to a halt even near the starting gates. Go in last and let the horse find his rhythm after the jump. Ride him out only when he is moving comfortably. Vasant followed the instructions to the letter and Adler won this Classic with ease but disaster struck soon after. As he was being slowed down at the end of the race, Adlers affliction returned and he crashed into the running rails cutting himself badly. Plans for the Indian Derby had to be scrapped and the horse was brought back to Bangalore. One of the assistant trainers was deputed to look after Adler and gradually the wounds healed. With the Indian Derby out of the question for Adler, sights were set on the Invitation Cup. Going into that race without a lead up Adler showed tremendous courage to win the event from a fast-finishing Thumbelina. To bring a horse back after two and a half months and win at the highest level is a top drawer feat and this must rank as one of Rashid Byramjis high points in a long and glittering career.
